Dehradun, situated at an altitude of 2200 feet from sea level, has a moderate climate, and is one of the most developed cities of India. This hill station can be visited throughout the year. Dehradun is the gateway to many well-known tourist destinations in India, such as Mussorie, Hardwar, Rishikesh, Lachmanjhula, Chakrata etc. Closer to the city (14 km), there is Sahasra Dhara medicinal sulfur waterfalls which is a very popular spot with tourists and locals for picnicking.
Dehradun is also home to many important Indian institutions and organizations. A public school (equivalent to a private school in USA) called the Doon School located in Dehradun, is considered as one of the best schools in India. Important institutions to visit in Dehradun includes Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Survey of India, Forest Research Institute (FRI), Indian Military Academy (IMA), Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology amongst others.
